If your child has a reading disability and is or may be eligible for special education services, you may need to legally challenge your school district. To succeed, you’ll probably need the help of a psychologist, a reading specialist, and other experts. Because their fees can easily run upward of $10,000, and you cannot get reimbursed if you win, you may not be able to afford them. Thus, you may not be able to effectively advocate for your child.
The IDEA Fairness Restoration Act (H.R. 2740) changes the situation. If you win your legal challenge, the district may have to pay all or part of your experts’ fees. If your challenge has merit (and, of course, it should), this will improve your chances of affording the expert help you need. It will make you a more powerful advocate for your child.
So, what should you do? Before Friday, tell your Congressional Representative to support the IDEA Fairness Restoration Act (H.R. 2740). You can call your Representative at 202-224-3121 (TTY 202-225-1904) or email him or her at www.house.gov/writerep/
